Yamba has a diverse range of main industries, these include, tourism, sugar cane, aquaculture, and fishing.
Other notable industries in the area include, coffee growing and boat building.
Brief Overview
- Tourism – The beauty of the area makes Yamba a magnet for those who appreciate nature or water based activities. Tourism is worth around (ABS 96-97) $59 million to the Lower Clarence region.
- Sugar Cane – With Australia’s oldest operating sugar mill, the Harwood Mill – built in 1874. This industry employs around 200 local people. All up the sugar industry contributes $250 million to the Northern Rivers economy.
- Aquaculture – The outskirts of Yamba are home to two prawn farms and in Brooms Head their is a snapper hatchery. The Clarence River is also home to thousands of oyster racks.
- Fishing – The area is home to the larges fishing fleet on the east coast of NSW. There are around 600 people who derive their principal income from the fishing industry with a turnover of $30 million dollars.
